Battery energy storage (BESS)

BESS-ready transformers — coming next.

Battery storage sends power both ways through the transformer, many times a day. We are extending our inverter duty transformer designs for BESS power conversion systems.

Our BESS transformer range is in development. Share your project — PCS make and model, MW / MWh, voltages and expected cycles per day — and our engineers will review it with you.

What storage asks of a transformer

A battery energy storage system charges from the grid and discharges back into it, so the transformer carries power in both directions. The power conversion system (PCS) adds harmonics, and storage often cycles several times a day with fast ramps between charging and discharging.

Most BESS transformers are mounted on a skid or beside a container with the PCS, so footprint, cooling and access for connections matter as much as the rating.

Building on inverter duty experience

Our solar inverter duty transformers (100 kVA to 25 MVA, up to 66 kV) are already designed for inverter harmonics, fluctuating load, outdoor exposure and high ambient temperatures — the same conditions a BESS transformer faces.

For collection and grid connection, distribution transformers (up to 3,150 kVA, 33 kV) and power transformers (up to 50 MVA, 132 kV) complete the plant.
